A Short No-Bullshit Tutorial on BlackBerry Pearl Tethering Using Bluetooth

by crumb

There are are tons of tutorials on the Internet for BlackBerry tethering, most of them instructing on how to tether using USB and (what I consider) bloatware like Blackberry Desktop Manager. I wanted a simpler process that required less software to be shoved into my hard drive to do something that many people think is pretty simple: connect to the Internet.

Doing a Google search for “blackberry pearl modem tether” yields 27,900 results. All of them telling you to use a USB cable and bloatware. Screw that, we’re going to use something different; we’re going to use Bluetooth.

My Quest to Calculate IP Address Ranges

by syntax

The first task is to calculate the number of “addresses” that exist between a given set of IP address ranges. Below are two examples:

192.168.0.0 - 192.168.0.9
192.168.49.0 - 192.167.60.255

PeerGuardian Blocklists

by syntax

The actual IP blocklists that PeerGuardian 2 uses are now rather hard to find. The list locations are not published on the Phoenix Labs site. In addition googling for the list location seems to be rather futile. Only after joining the #methlabs IRC channel on irc.freenode.net did I notice that the link for the blocklists location is in the topic. I don’t wish to go through the trouble of finding that specific link again. So for myself and others that it might help, here it is: IP Blocklists

I plan to use null routing on my Linux server to block IP addresses on the list. Not too long ago I attempted to use IPtables rules to block at least a few thousand IP addresses from the p2p blocklist. If you try this on your own, you will soon realize that this is not a good idea. Null routing is only good for blocking a TCP handshake, as TCP replies will be routed to localhost. However, for bittorrent purposes, this method should suffice. Other methods include using software that supports the IPtables queue module, which sends packets into userspace to be denied or approved. MOBlock seems to be a Linux application with such functionality that is rapidly growing in popularity. Null routing using IProute 2 syntax is as simple as:

iproute add IP_ADDRESS via 127.0.0.1

The new PeerGuardian 2 list format is compressed using 7zip to achieve higher compression ratios. Don’t ask me who made that decision. I would hardly call 7zip a standard format. For those of you *nix users out there, p7zip is the port that you want.

emerge -av p7zip

sudo port install p7zip

2008 Subaru WRX STi Test Drive With Peter Solberg

by syntax

Peter Solberg drives the new STi to its limit. He should know where that limit is, he’s responsible for the design transition. I’ve heard nothing but good reviews on the performance of the new design. Sure there are those that remain firm in their distaste of hatchbacks. However, Subaru and Peter Solberg have stated that they want the STi to remain true to WRC. They want to maintain a competitive platform. Time to move into the future.

iTerm alt+key behavior with irssi

by syntax

Apparently the iTerm application itself traps Alt key combinations. For terminal applications like irssi, this causes somewhat of a problem. To change windows in irssi use Esc, number instead of Alt+number. On my Macbook, pageup and pagedown are simply fn+up and fn+down. Here is the original post and more information on keyboard combinations for iTerm.

2008 Subaru WRX STi

by syntax

According to Motor Trend, North Americans have a distaste towards hatchbacks. However, the new dimensions, both interior and exterior, are supposed to make up for the conversion of the 2008 WRX STi to hatchback only. I hope to buy an STi sometime in 2008. I can’t say that I’m ecstatic about the look of the hatchback, but I hope it will grow on me in time. On the other hand, the STi is supposed to have a functional back seat now. Hatchbacks are in… everywhere except in America. Why are hatchbacks so popular everywhere else? If you know, fill me in.

Trevis vs Asbestos vs Stratomind

Here is the replay: strato_asbes_trevis-1supremecommanderreplay.zip I will post screenshots later after I review the game.

On second thought, who needs screenshots after you’ve seen a few from Supreme Commander. Eye candy is eye candy, you should get the point.

SupCom - Stratomind, Asbestos vs Balanced

by syntax

The AI in Supreme Commander doesn’t seem to be overly challenging so far. The Balanced (Hard) AI kept pace with my score up until about the middle of the game. It was easily overcome by 2 players. I have yet to face the Supreme AI. Hopefully it will live up to its name. My suggestion is to fight as many AI players as you have real players. See the replay,t-stratomind_asbestos-3supremecommanderreplay.zip, to see some good build orders, experimental stages, and nuclear warfare at the end.

BFG Tech Power Supply Failure

by syntax

My BFG Tech 650W BFGR650PSU died today. The symptoms included my computer rebooting in the middle of a SupCom game that I was doing very well in and random/continued reboots. It almost seemed as though the power was surging. I can’t say that I’ve had a power supply die like that before. Power supplies in the past have failed to power on at all and/or destroy most, if not all, of the hardware connected to it. I replaced it with a $170 Antec from Best Buy because I’m not patient enough to get one from on online Vendor. If it wasn’t my gaming machine I probably would have waited. Why power supply units are so expensive these days, I do not know.
